Mathematical Investigation Skills Lecture
This name sounds like you’ll just be doing a survey and making a pie chart, right? That’s what I thought, however I was pleasantly surprised! It is actually a beginners computer programming module. This is personally my favourite module, as it is something completely new. We have learnt 4 different computer languages so far; Python, LaTeX, R and HTML. Each one enables you to do different things! Python and R are fairly similar in the sense that they allow you to write your own codes, which is pretty cool. LaTeX is a bit different. Have you ever wondered how the maths gets inputted into your exam papers? Obviously you can’t do that using Microsoft Word. Well, that’s what LaTeX is for! It allows you to typeset maths (and a whole load of other things) into your work and creates professional looking PDF files. HTML is the language of websites, so I can now write my own website! This module is optional, so if you are doing a straight maths course you have to do all the others, but instead of this one you could take an unrestricted module, for example a German module or a Chemistry module. However, I strongly recommend this module, as I think it is great fun and you also learn tonnes of employable skills! Since this is an optional module, the lectures are quite small, around 60-80 people.
